ABOUT two million children in Uganda will be orphaned by HIV/AIDS in five years’ time unless prevention, care and treatment intervention of the pandemic are scaled up to reach the most vulnerable children.
“The Ministry of Gender estimates that there are two million orphans countrywide, with nearly half of them orphaned by AIDS. Of these, an estimated 940,000 children were orphaned in 2003 while the current projections suggest that 11% (1,900,000) will be orphans in 2010,†UNICEF country representative Martin mogwanja,†said.
He was presiding over the national celebrations to mark the Day of the African Child at Kololo Airstrip on Thursday.
Education minister Namirembe Bitamazire said a policy on orphans and vulnerable children would assist orphans and help alleviate child-related problems.
