Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) officials were on Tuesday blocked from making speeches at a funeral service of a party member, George Mwigo, at his home in Nawanyago in Kamuli district.
The officials were led by the party’s Constitutional Steering Committee chairman, Haji Badru Wegulo (below) and secretary Peter Walubiri.
Though the programme had indicated that a UPC representative would give a speech, the clan members decided to leave the party out, saying politics would spoil the service.
The party participated in the funeral arrangements. The casket was also draped in party colours.
The party chairman for Busoga, Patrick Miyingo, was bitter that Wegulo was not given a chance to eulogise the deceased, whom various speakers described as a pioneer of development in the area.
“This is very ridiculous. How can the family members deny us a chance to speak on this occasion when we have done everything possible to make it what it is,” Miyingo said.
“Nobody facilitated the development that speaker after speaker was talking about other than UPC. When the UPC government was toppled, all his projects stalled or were destroyed,” he added.
The family also rejected a condolence message from the Kyabazinga, Henry Muloki, because the bearer of the message, the deputy speaker of the Lukiiko, George mutyabule, is a UPC member.
However, the finance state minister, Isaac Musumba, was asked to address the mourners.
