SIR — In 2001, Aduku S.S. students went on strike and two of them were shot. One of them is still paralysed. In 2003,
students from the same school were detained by police in the same cell with robbers who wanted to molest them.

Last year once again students from Aduku were remanded at Kwania Prisons’ farm for alleged misconduct.

This year, there have been numerous suspension at the school which climaxed with the closing of Aduku S. S. on June 30.

As a concerned citizen, I suggest some measures to
curb the indiscipline at Aduku.

There should be regular meetings for all stakeholders in the school, including Old Boys who should form a disciplinary committee.

The school administrators should avoid as much as possible involving the Police.

Teachers who have taught at Aduku for more than five years should be transferred. It would also be useful if rapport between teachers, students and administrators was built to foster mutual understanding.

Students should not be allowed to be idle. It is this idleness which sometimes results in mischief. The students should be kept busy with extra-curricular activities.

Students and teachers should share ideas and understudy model schools where strikes have never occurred. The students Council should be supported to help provide
effective information.

District officials and opinion leaders should be invited regularly to talk to students. There should be a suggestion box in strategic places in the school where students can put their suggestions. .
