THE Police have arrested 12 men suspected of having murdered President Museveni’s bodyguard Lt. Akoragye last November.

Lt. David Magara, the commandant of the Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU), yesterday said four of the suspects were taxi drivers on the Kampala/Gaba route.

The men are reportedly part of a bigger gang of highway robbers who have been harassing people in Kampala, Mbarara, Bushenyi and Jinja.

They were arrested during a police swoop to crack down on criminals that started on June 24.

Magara said the police had been trailing the robbers for sometime until they arrested one, who revealed the others.

Taxi drivers arrested are Moses Katwesigye Barigye, Apollo Bariyo, Bernard Mugisha and Robert Muhangi, who at times rides a bodaboda. Others are Bernard Guma and Sam Muhangi, both Kampala businessmen and Katongole, who is a mechanic.

Akoragye, who was a member of the Presidential Guard Brigade at President Museveni’s country home in Rwakitura, was on November 4, 2004 murdered while taking his pregnant wife to hospital to deliver.

The thugs way-laid the vehicle and in the scuffle, Akoragye was shot and killed.

Magara said the police did not know that the arrested men were among those who killed Akoragye until one of them directed the police to a hideout where they found the deceased’s pistol with seven bullets.
