THE U-20 soccer team, summoned a couple of weeks ago, will eventually regroup at Nakivubo stadium today as planned but FUFA might well consider them for the U-23 team as well.
Called for the CECAFA Youth championships next month in Zanzibar, the majority picked are already veterans of the U-20 category and are denying younger players an opportunity.
SC Villa custodian Denis Onyango was part of the U-20 side that defeated Sudan 3-1 in 2003 at Nakivubo stadium.
He has been called up again for U-20 national duty together with other ‘veterans’ Tom Ssemwogerere, Martin Muwanga, Geoffrey Masa, Edward Ssali, Mark Mwambu, Anthony Bongole, George Kalibala, Nicholas Kabali and Bruno Olobo.
Despite the over-flowing talent from the various kids leagues, the FUFA youth football committee has gone for experienced heads.
Encouragingly,Edgar Watson, in charge of the youth development on the committee, promised to investigate each of the players called so that Uganda fields a truly young but strong team.
“We are aware and will have to re-assess these players before naming the team that will travel,” Watson said.
The U-20 team will be coached by German-trained Moses Basena. Uganda will open against Djibouti and Sudan.
