AT least 630 girls were defiled in northern Uganda between January and June 2005, the July 19 regional crime report issued by the regional CID officer, Dennis Odongpiny, said.

He said the children, who fled their homes to commuting centres, were the main victims.

Lira recorded 223 cases, being the most affected district, followed by Gulu with 178 and Apac with 130 cases.
Kitgum district registered 83 cases, while Pader had 16.

Odongpiny said Lira had always led in general crime in the north because it was the district with the highest population.
There were 134 murder cases, 24 rapes, 158 robberies, indecent assault, common assault and theft cases in the north.

Among the capital offences, defilement still remains the leading crime, Odongpiny said.

“Many parents negotiate with the defilers outside court after reporting to the Police. We shall charge them,” he said.
