THE army killed seven Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels and rescued five captives during battles along the Sudan-Uganda border in Kitgum and Pader on Monday. In a statement, the northern region spoke-sman, Capt. Paddy Ankunda, said three rebels were killed and a UPDF soldier was wounded in Ngomoromo in Chua county, adding that three rebels were killed and another captured in Lalak hills in Chua county, Kitgum district. One rebel was killed at Acholi Bur sub-county in Pader district.

Obote pleads
LUSAKA, Tuesday - Former President Milton Obote has urged his countrymen to boycott tomorrow’s referendum, descr-ibing it as an “exercise in futility”, his son told AFP yesterday.
Obote’s son Jimmy Okena said his father felt that “you cannot ask people to vote on issues of human rights such as the right to assembly and association as these are rights, which cannot be subjected to a vote.”

Dokolo county residents have been told to vote for the ‘yes’ side in tomorrow’s referendum.
The Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, was on Monday addressing a rally at Bata primary school. He said the Movement wants to open up political space to free those complaining about it.

THE Kenyan assistant minister of urban authorities, Maina Kamanda, is in Uganda to witness tomorrow’s referendum.
Kamanda, accompanied by six officials, hailed President Yoweri Musev-eni’s government for creating stability in Uganda. The delegation met Kampala mayor Ssebaana Kizito at the Mayor’s parlour yesterday.

UK worried

BRITAIN is concerned with the LRA continued attacks and looting of food in northern Uganda.
Ian Pearson, the Foreign secretary of State, told the UK Parliament that the security situation has deteriorated since the expiry of the cease-fire in February and the onset of the rainy season.
