UGANDA made an impact by shattering seven national records at the 11th World Swimming championships that ended on Sunday in Montreal, Canada, writes Phillip Corry.

Since Uganda’s debut at the world meet in 2001 in Japan, this year’s performance was most outstanding. Four swimmers rewrote personal bests with 14-year-old Natasha Ratter making her debut in outstanding fashion.

Ratter was the biggest discovery on the Ugandan team, setting new marks in the 100m backstroke (1:26.78). Her previous mark was 1:40.04.

She also broke her 50m backstroke with a new record of 37.89 beating her previous time of 40.98
Gilbert Kaburu, the most experienced on the team bettered his 50m butterfly record. He clocked 30.41 – his past being 30.46. He also returned 28.28 to better his old mark of 34.40 in the men’s 50m backstroke.

Aya Nakitanda set two new times (1:07.76) in the women’s 100m freestyle and 30.51 in the 50m freestyle.
