The Privatisation and Utility Sector Reform (PU) project has invited expressions of interest for a review and restructuring of sectoral regulators, PU’s spokesman, Jim Mugunga, has said.

Mugunga said on Tuesday in Kampala that the PU needs advice on how to handle the growing number of agencies.

Some of the agencies are the Uganda Communications Commission and Electricity Regulatory Authority.

The agencies have been making high profile decisions, especially through licensing and price setting, which have affected the economy. Their number and influence is predicted to increase.

There are 19 regulatory agencies, which have resulted from the Government’s action since the mid 1990s to rationalise public enterprises through privatisation and other polices like liberalisation.
