IRELAND has earmarked euros 4.3m (sh9.5b) to support the post-primary education and training programme in the Karamoja region.

Speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding at the embassy yesterday, outgoing Irish ambassador Martin O’Fainin said the programme would supplement government policies.

“Support to education, particularly to UPE, is a very important component of ireland’s support to the Poverty Eradication Action Plan.

“In addition to the funding, the embassy contributes to the Poverty Action Fund and education sector budget,” O’Fainin said.

He said the three-year programme targeted 11 secondary schools and two primary teacher training colleges in the districts of Kotido, Moroto and Nakapiripirit.

The document was signed by an official from the embassy and three local district officials.
