Club Silk’s DJ Alberto, one of Kampala’s most admired DJs, does not need your prayers anymore after splitting with WBS’ Irene Birungi, with whom he has a child. He has warmed himself into the heart of a stunner, 22-year-old Olivia Namutebi, known to sit by his side as he spins the machines.
She speaks about their romance, how she stands by DJ Alberto all night as he spins the discs and how he is the one thing that has been missing in her life.
QUESTION: What do you do?
I have just completed my Bachelor of Education at Makerere University. I expect to graduate early next year. My current ‘job’ is to look after DJ Alberto and wait for him as he spins the machines (laughs). Seriously, I’m job-hunting although I don’t expect to teach.
How old were you when you first stepped into a dance haIl?
I was a fresher, and I must have been 19. I and two other friends from Park Lane hostel went to Ange Noir Executive wing during the freshers’ orientation week. We danced till the wee hours of the morning.
How long have you known DJ Alberto?
Close to three years now.
How did you meet?
At Ange Noir discotheque. He left the DJ’s cabin, walked up to me on the dance floor gave me his business card and told me to call him. I didn’t. I don’t know how he got my number but he called me after two days, sounding poetic and so convincing on the phone. I remember him saying... “If kisses were rain, I would send you showers, if fun was time I’d send you hours, If you needed a friend I would send you me. It took me two weeks to give him a serious thought.
We later met at the Venue (Garden City) I learnt that besides being handsome, he is a funny and witty guy. He was so warm and romantic we passionately kissed on our first date.
What does it feel like waiting for Alberto?
It feels great. You know one good turn deserves another. DJ Alberto is everything to me. He is special, nice, loving, honest, perfect and attractive. Naturally I find it so easy to sit by his side. Since I lost my mother, he is my best friend. He’s so easy to talk to. Contrary to what many think, I don’t stand by him because I fear he’d cheat on me. I do it out of love.
Do you get jealous when ladies heap praises and seek contacts with DJ Alberto for his spinning skills?
No I don’t. I’ve learnt to ignore. First, I used to hurt inside, but from what I know, Alberto is mine. I could stake my heart on that.
Do men make passes at you in club? How does Alberto react?
They do. On average over five each night. Some throw business cards at my feet, send waitresses with money to deliver to me, others simply write chits declaring their undying love, with promises to buy me houses and cars! Like me, Alberto has learnt to ignore such advances.
Do you wish DJ Alberto was doing something else?
No. DJ Alberto has amassed a wealth of experience at his job as a DJ. He is comfortable doing what he does. When he’s not in the club he runs a mobile disco known as Amsta Hyper sounds. Naturally, I want a man who doesn’t only work for money, but some one who also makes money work for him.
Do you ever go dancing with him?
We often go to Club Ange Noir on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, especially on days when he isn’t working. Sometimes we dance at the Silk Lounge.
Do you ever play loud music at home?
Ntinda stretcher, where I live with DJ Alberto is a very quiet place. You would be nuts to play loud music. To us, home is about resting since ‘we’ work at night.
Who cooks at home? What is his favourite meal?
I cook once everyday. We have some of the food for lunch and keep the rest of it in food flasks where we find it warm when we return. He loves irish potatoes and meat.
Have you met your prospective in-laws yet? If yes, do they like you?
Yes I have and there are no doubts they like me. Alberto’s mum is my best friend she is like my mother. We talk a lot and she keeps telling me to be faithful, so I wouldn’t break her baby boy’s heart.
Does it ever bother you that Alberto is becoming potbellied, with you the svelte figure?
Yes it does. I have reminded him countless times and after persisting he enrolled at the health club at Garden city. I love fit men not the fat ones.
Any babies, wedding?
Who wouldn’t dream of wedding a man of their dreams? Alberto is yet to propose, but I know a wedding is in the pipeline. I would love to give him two lovely children.
