THE Kampala district Tender Board has contracted Multiplex Ltd to complete the reconstruction of Kikuubo lane in the city centre at sh272m.
Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) early last year collected money from traders in Kikuubo to reconstruct the lane.
The work, however, stalled after KACITA failed to raise all the funds.
“My executive decided that we complete the works. The district tender board has now contracted Multiplex at about sh272m,” Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito said on Tuesday.
He said Kampala City Council (KCC) and the Central Division contributed sh28m towards the reconstruction of the lane. “Some traders and shop owners did not contribute. KACITA approached us and we contributed some money,” he said.
At the time KACITA repaired the lane, gutters and drainage were left open, resulting into the drowning of a city cyclist recently.
Ssebaana said KCC did not give attention to Kikuubo lane because it was a back lane used by traders and businessmen to connect to their stores in Kikuubo.
He said as business continued to boom in the city, the Kikuubo stores were turned into shops.
