FIFTEEN rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), including their chief priest, Brig. Abonga Papa, were killed on Monday by the UPDF at Kadomera in Palabek-Kal sub-county in Kitgum district.

Abonga was among the LRA peace team led by the former LRA spokesman, Brig. Sam Kolo, that met the government peace team in November last year.

The UPDF 5th division spokes-man, Lt. Deo Akiki, yesterday said the UPDF helicopter gunship attacked the rebels heading towards Sudan.

They were led by the LRA deputy commander, Vincent Otti, and some others, including Abonga.
The northern-based army spokesman, Capt. Paddy Ankunda, told journalists that UPDF officers had travelled to the scene to identify the dead.

He said the rebels were carrying looted items, including foodstuff which they were taking to their leader Joseph Kony now hiding in Kit valley in southern Sudan.

He said a rebel commander, Capt. Dennis Owiny, was killed at 1:11pm during a battle with the UPDF 601 brigade at Patongo sub-county in Agago county, Pader district.

“Our forces also killed one rebel in an ambush in Matidi sub-county in Kitgum district at about 10:30pm and recovered one gun and 29 bullets.

“Another rebel was killed at Paracele village in Palabek-Kal in a night operation and we recovered one rifle with 90 rounds of ammunition,” Akiki added.
