She moves with an athletes’ poise. Winnie Ajio, sister to the world 3000m-steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru, is only nine years old, but, her P5 teacher at Okazara Primary School Joseph Ajedra, is confident he has another champion in his class.

“Ajio has started well and we now rely on her for the 200m races,” Ajedra said.

He recalls that they first realised Ajio’s potential in 2003.

“The tiny girl (above) ran with extraordinary pace and became the first in the schools competition,” Ajedra said.

This year, Ajio, like Inzikuru before, represented Vurra county in the Arua district county athletics championships where she was third in the 200m juniors’ race.

She is also very bright and is always among the top ten in her class.

At home, her father Jackson Lulua likes sending her on errands.
“She is the most sent because when you send her to the shops she runs and returns quickly,” says her mother Joyce.

Meanwhile, construction of a classroom and office block at Okazara Primary School that was started by Inzikuru has stalled at foundation level since 2000.
