EX-FUFA general secretary Haruna Mawanda (right) who has been evading arrest for the better part of this year can now come out of hiding.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) yesterday cleared him of charges of embezzling sh12m and causing financial loss to FUFA, after he satisfactorily accounted for the money.

State Attorney Jane Kajuga told Buganda Road Court chief magistrate Margaret Tibulya that she had instructions from the DPP to withdraw the charges against Mawanda.

Tibulya eliminated him from the charge sheet, leaving former FUFA boss Denis Obua to face the charges alone.

Mawanda failed to respond to criminal summons, prompting a warrant of arrest that had been extended several times prior to the withdrawal of the charges.

The case in which Obua is supposed to answer charges of embezzling sh104m came up for mention in the same court and was adjourned to September 23 as investigations were incomplete.

Prosecution alleges that between 1999 and 2001 at FUFA headquarters in Kampala, Obua embezzled the money and caused financial loss to the federation.
