ONE of Africa’s biggest schools’ sports competitions is about to set Mbarara town alight.

The Eastern Africa Secondary Schools championship will from August 28 to September 3 have 85 schools contesting in 10 disciplines at Ntare and Mary Hill schools.

Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association organizing secretary Patrick Okanya said by yesterday 34 Ugandan schools had confirmed. Kenya had 25; Rwanda six; Tanzania seven and Zanzibar three.

“It’s going to be grand,” said the regional body’s president Justus Mugisha adding that the event will also be an opportunity to harmonize schools sports policies in the region.

The sh180m competition had its inaugural version in 2002 in Nairobi with an entry of 22 schools. The entries grew to 22 schools from Uganda and 21 from Kenya last year.

Defending champions are St Marys Kitende (soccer and netball), Manjasi High(boys basketball), Najja SS (girls basketball), Kasawo SS (girls handball), Kimili SS-(boys handball), Lugulu (girls volleyball), Kasaos SS (boys volleyball) and Wiyeta (girls football).
