THE Government will not tolerate journalists who compromise national security, information state minister Dr. James Nsaba Buturo has said.
“Press freedom that threatens national security, disrespects elders and depends on hearsay will not be allowed,” Buturo said.
He asked journalists to develop a spirit of nationalism, adding, “You can be economical with the truth if it is likely to bring disorder in society.”
Buturo was on Friday officiating at the graduation ceremony of the United Media consultants and Trainers (UMCAT) school of journalism and mass communication at Fairway Hotel in Kampala. Over 200 students graduated.
He called for a vibrant-but-not-manipulable and subservient press for development as Uganda transits to multipartyism.
“Some people abroad think they know what Uganda wants more than us. The government and journalists should join hands to fight such people to keep Uganda a sovereign state,” he said.
Flanked by Charles Ogwel, the institute director, Buturo said the Government would operationalise the information Act to allow journalists access information.
