THE Governmant has invested heavily to ensure minimum infrastructures to handle fish, the commissioner for fisheries, Dick Nyeko, has said.

“A modern landing site is under construction at Wakawaka in Bugiri district,” he said.

The fisheries project will develop 30 landing sites in various districts, which will handle about 50% of the captured fish in the wild.

Lake Kyoga has about 250 landing sites, of which few meet international standards.

The fisheries department will develop at least 80 new sites in the next 10 years.

All districts will have district fisheries officers for quality assurance and a senior quality assurance and aquaculture officer at every subcounty.

The fisheries department has secured eight boats to counter illegal unregulated and unreported fishing at the national level.
