THE president should stop appointing “political failures” as envoys, MPs on the parliamentary committee on presidential and foreign affairs have said.

Meeting foreign affairs ministry officials led by state minister for international relations Henry Oryem Okello, MPs on the committee chaired by Margaret Zziwa (Kam-pala) said appointing political failures to represent Uganda dents the country’s image as a sovereign state.

“Would consider advising the appointing authority to consider appointing career diplomats who have had vast experience in diplomacy issues than appointing political failures and social rejects?” said Abdul Katuntu (Bugweri).

Katuntu said President Yoweri museveni had run short of new people to an extent of appointing people who served in the late Idi Amin’s government.

Museveni on Monday named 12 new ambassadors and recalled others in a wide-raging reshuffle.

Aggrey Awori (Samia Bugwe north) said there was no need to appoint new envoys when three ambassadors were appointed last year have never been deployed to any mission.
