Barely three months after retiring from the army at a ceremony in Bombo, maverick UPDF officer Brig. Kasirye Gwanga has rejoined it, reports Emmy Allio.
He requested President Yoweri Museveni to allow him to continue soldering, sources said. Museveni allowed him to serve on a renewable contract of five years.
“Brig. Kasirye returned to the army recently, but he is yet to be deployed. I think he is more comfortable in the army than out there with civilians,†said UPDF spokesman Lt. Col. Shaban Bantariza.
Kasirye, a National Resistance Army bush war veteran, took a five-year leave from the army to serve as chairman of Mubende district. He did not seek another term and had retired from the army to concentrate on vegetable growing at his vast farm in Mubende.
On January 31, Museveni promoted him from a colonel to a brigadier and retired him thereafter.
Kasirye yesterday said, “I found that civilians are disorganised yet I was used to the organised military society. After testing the waters, I found them very muddy. I think I am still of some use to the army.â€
Kasirye, never short of controversy, renewed his determination to campaign to be Katikkiro (premier) of Buganda.
“The New Vision should inform the Baganda about my desire to become the next Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom. I am campaigning very hard,†he said.
But Bantariza said it may conflict with the UPDF law. He said, “It is not possible for him to serve in the military and seek elective office.
The law bars a serving officer from seeking elective office during the multiparty era.†Kasirye said he hoped to bring sanity to Mengo.
