SIR — Everyday we are bombarded with stories of heart patients in the media who are begging for financial assistance to go for heart operation either in India, Germany or South Africa. These patients are a few of many poor heart patients in this country, many of whom die because they cannot afford to fly out of the country for treatment.
However, given the increasing number of heart patients in the country it is not sustainable to always rely on contributions of well-wishers for treating the patients. Uganda should buy a heart surgery machine to save the lives of many people who cannot afford the cost of travelling abroad. Heart ailments can affect anybody, including government officials, some of whom have been abroad for this treatment. Two possibilities could be explored to procure this machine. the government can foot all the bill of the machine or can go into partnership with one of the private hospitals in the country. Alternatively, any hospital capable of having this machine can fundraise for this noble cause and I pledge my support for this cause.
