A UPDF soldier on Tuesday night shot dead two of his colleagues and committed suicide.

The victims were shot several times in the head and chest.

They were UPDF soldiers attached to the Senior Staff College, Kimaka in Jinja district.

An AK-47 rifle and four magazines of ammunition were recovered besides the dead body of the assailant, Private Arinaitwe Kyakabale.

The officer-in-charge of Jinja central Police station, Daniel Zeba, identified the victims as Pte. Fred Tushabe and Pte. Fred Nuwahereza.

Zeba said they had not established the motive of the murders.

The three had gone out for a drink at a pub near umber court market in Jinja town.

Patrons at the bar told the Police that Tushabe and Arinaitwe had developed a misunderstanding that sparked off a quarrel.

Arinaitwe reportedly abandoned his colleagues, after telling them that he was going back to the barracks. The Police said Arinaitwe waylaid his victims as they returned to the barracks. He later shot himself in the head.

Pte. James Agaba, who walked back to the barracks with Arinaitwe, described the incident as tragic.
