SIR — The recently concluded selection for Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com , Cox) at Makerere University needs close scrutiny.

Many students with Certified Professional Certificate (CPA) Part 1 or level 1, Kenya Accounting Technician Certificate (KATC), diploma and A’ level qualifications with a subsidiary in economics were left out.

Makerere claims that they lacked the necessary requirements for admission to B. Com Cox and say they cannot determine the weight of CPA, KATC and are not aware of the qualifications.

CPA, KATC and Accounts Technician Certificates (ATC) are recognised courses offered by reputable institutions with credible examination bodies. Even if one got a subsidiary pass in economics at A’ level, holding CPA, KATC and ATC would enable one to qualify for B. Com Cox because one is re-examined in economics and other commercial subject before getting CPA.

There is no good reason why one with CPA (level 1) KATC, a diploma and A’ level certificate with a subsidiary pass in economics should not be eligible for the degree while a person with a diploma in history, economics and geography should qualify just because of a principal pass in economics.

I appeal to the senate and the academic registrar’s office to come up with clear guidelines for the qualifications of the course.
