THE army has said former Internal Security Organisation chief Brig. Henry Tumukunde did not punch his chief escort at Makindye but expressed his anger by shouting at him, contrary to press reports.
Army spokesman Lt. Col. Shaban Bantariza in a statement on Saturday said the army had established that Tumukunde did not fight at Makindye and therefore no action can be brought against him.
“The army has since investigated the allegations and established that Brig. Tumukunde expressed anger and shouted at Lt. Nyakairu for taking him to the court martial when he thought he should have been taken to the high court,” Bantariza said.
He said Tumukunde’s shouting at the escort did not amount to a fight or assault and that it was needless to pursue the matter further.
“This does not constitute a chargeable offence which the UPDF would have done if indeed he had fought or assaulted the officer as alleged in the media,” Bantariza said.
The New Vision and The Daily Monitor on Friday carried front-page stories of the incident, saying the former spy chief had lost his cool and roughed up Nyakairu at the Court Martial on Thursday.
