ARUA district councillors on Thursday walked out of a council meeting after disagreeing on the location of the headquarters of a new district to be curved out of Arua.

The meeting was convened to decide the name and the headquarters of the district to comprise Maracha and Terego counties.

After over five hours of deliberations, seven councillors from Terego marched out of the Social Centre hall when the speaker, Ali Adrama, called for a vote on whether to establish the headquarters at Nyadri in Maracha or Kubala in Terego.

The Terego group refused to vote because councillors from Madi Okollo county were siding with those from Maracha because of a long-standing land wrangle between the Madi and Terego.

They also vowed to remain under Arua or form their own district if the headquarters were set up in Nyadri.
Terego and Maracha MPs Kassiano Wadri and Alex Onzima accused each other of politically-motivated foul play over the matter.

The speaker said the matter would be forwarded to the concerned parliamentary committee.
