writes that the Mid-Eastern CID chief, Hillary Odoch, said the number of cases registered in August was 545 compared to 463 in July and 357 in June.

He attributed the rise in crime to drunkenness. “Alcoholism makes people to commit crime,” Odoch said.

The report says common assault was leading with 194 cases, theft 59, defilement 49, malicious damage 23, theft of bicycles 16 and escape from lawful custody 14 cases.

The report indicates that Kumi leads in crime with 206 cases, followed by Soroti 137, Katakwi 118 and Kaberamaido 84.

Odoch said out of the 206 cases in Kumi district, common assault cases were leading with 106 and many cases are attributed to drunkenness.

He cited a recent incident where a man was beaten to death by his friends after a drunken brawl.
