DEFILEMENT topped the northern regional Police crime list for August, with 158 cases reported, with the highest figure of 57 in Lira district.

The regional CID officer, Dennis Odongpiny, said defilement was on the rise in northern Uganda due to crowding in the displaced people’s camps and poverty.

Records at the regional Police CID indicate that Gulu recorded 52 defilement cases, Kitgum 11, Apac 30, while Pader registered eight cases.

Odongpiny lashed out at parents who opt to negotiate with defilers, saying they were “turning defilement into a business”.

He said there were 1,146 cases reported in the region in August.

Odongpiny said the Police recorded 34 murder cases, six of rape, 45 robberies, while shop breaking had 11, terrorism two, embezzlement three and one of sedition.

The Police recorded 185 theft cases. Four of them were of motorcycles and 27 of bicycles.

Odongpiny said Lira topped in robbery with 20 cases, while Kitgum recorded six, Gulu 13, Apac six and Pader had three.

He said 358 cases were reported to court with 407 suspects charged and 116 convicted.
