Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) last week impounded 350 smuggled bales of bed sheets and T-shirts worth sh125m, and 100 bundles of polythene bags, 18 DVD players, 20 Home theaters, garments and drugs, valued at sh30m.
Enoch Walugembe, URA’s assistant commissioner for enforcement, said the merchanise was recovered from trucks Reg. Nos UAA 256A and UAE 704X at Namanve and Kiryandongo respectively.
“The bales of bed sheets were worth sh71m in taxes and would attract sh62m in fines.
“The electronics and drugs, impounded in Kiryandongo will attract sh15m in fines,” Walugembe told reporters in Kampala.
He said people should desist from smuggling and save their capital “because it is increasingly becoming difficult to beat URA traps.”
Walugembe said URA has invested heavily in intelligence network to crackdown the smugglers.
