YESTERDAY was that usual customary day when SC Villa played to the weighty legacy of their glorious past, eliminating Police with a deserved 2-0 victory in the Kakungulu Cup at Namboole stadium.

Driven on by the magnificent Ronald Muganga, a nine-man Jogoos outfit inflicted revenge and ran the Police FC jaggernaut off the rail of the prestigious competition in the second round.

And like the City Tyres Super League final in which Police ran out 3-1 penalty winners, this was as expected a game of brutal tension.

The surest evidence that Ugandan football was no longer the same, came when the ever-confident Villa fans began grumbling through half-time with the score still goalless.

However, coach Sam Timbe’s charges seemed to have found inspiration in the dressing room after the break with two vital substitutes in Muganga and Robert Sentongo.

Muganga struck home after 78 minutes after ripping Police apart before setting up Ssentongo (pictured left) for the second.

The tactical key to Villa’s success, despite the exit of Alex Ndugga with a broken arm, had been the arrival of the two wily and gritty youngsters, who plugged the gaps around David Yiga and provided fresh composure and confidence.

Feeding on the fervour of their supporters, Police never looked like recovering.

The Jogoos, who face Masaka LC in the quarterfinals, looked sharper, hungrier, high on adrenalin, on tempo and on ambition, certainly in both halves.

Emmanuel Balyejusa had been immense in midfield and Steven Nsereko not far behind in influence.
