PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni does not doubt the integrity of the Electoral Commission (EC), chaired by Eng. Badru Kiggundu, NRM spokesman Ofwono Opondo has said.

In a statement to The New Vision yesterday, Ofwono said the New Vision report gave “a general false impression that president Yoweri Museveni as chairperson of the National Resistance Movement has cast doubt on the credibility of the national electoral commission.”

Ofwono said while Museveni referred to the figure of 8.5 million voters as per the EC current record and the statistics from the last national population census during the closed meeting of the interim executive of NRM on Tuesday, “at no time did he dispute the EC figures.

“All the President raised was his concern that although the population census figures indicate that Ugandans of 18 years and above were about 12.5 million, the registered voters were low, and that it should be the responsibility of NRM as a political organisation to mobilise its supporters and members to get registered when the EC starts to update the national voter registration.”

“He further explained that all voters and local officials and opinion leaders should ensure that their adults cross-check their names and photographs in the voters’ registers so that complaints on the polling day are minimised.”
