President Yoweri Museveni (above) has directed that evictions of tenants from land must stop immediately

President Yoweri Museveni (above) has directed that evictions of tenants from land must stop immediately, reports Anne Mugisa.

Museveni said he would meet with resident district commissioners (RDCs), Attorney General Khiddu Makubuya, the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. katumba Wamala, Principal Judge James Ogoola, as well as his legal assistants to see how his directive can be effected.

This was at a meeting of the NRM interim executive committee at the party headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday.

“If you are foolish to buy land occupied by other people, then you should lose your money,” Museveni said.

He said the only evictions he will accept is where a landlord or one who has bought the land has held negotiations with tenants and they agreed on compensation.

A statement from State House yesterday quoted Museveni as saying plans were underway to punish those involved in giving oppressive court orders, which have facilitated land evictions.

He said he did not want to see any more eviction orders being issued by magistrates and judges. He said those who do it would be disciplined.

The President also said internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps were not properly administered.
He said he would call a meeting of stakeholders to discuss proper administration of the camps, to stop some NGOs from taking advantage of residents.

Museveni blamed corruption on permanent secretaries, Chief administrative Officers and Town Clerks. He said it was not possible for a politician to embezzle funds without the collusion of the public officers like the CAOs.
