HANNINGTON Kalyesubula yesterday won the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) September award for his brilliant performance that helped Police FC to their first Super League title.

Kalyesubula gathered 430 votes to beat rally driver Riyaz Kurji to second place by 55 ballots.

The Police FC custodian saved two penalties and halted SC Villa’s bid for their eighth consecutive title a fortnight ago.

Riyaz, who was nominated for winning the 2005 Pearl of Africa Rally but missed the Africa Rally Champion’s title by two points, was favourite to take the USPA award.

“Personally I thought Kurji should have won this. But members have voted democratically. Kalyesubula is the winner and that is it,” a USPA executive member said after the voting.

Darts player Saulo Mukasa finished third after he polled 305 ballots for winning the Uganda International Open.

The scribes also commended Uganda Christian University, Mukono volleyball team for winning the national volleyball championships in Masindi.

Police FC, St Mary’s Kitende netball team and badminton player Edwin Ekiring were recognised for their excellent performances in the month.
