Former President Apollo Milton Obote’s body yesterday lay in state at Parliament.

The House today holds a special session to pay tribute to the man who led Uganda to independence.
Obote died of kidney failure in a Johannesburg on October 10.

The body was received at Parliament by the Speaker, Edward Ssekandi, ministers and MPs at 4:30pm. Obote’s wife Miria, children and relatives dressed mostly in red and black, accompanied the body.

“I would like to receive the body of the former president, Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, at Parliament where we are going to pay tribute, to thank him for the contribution he made towards the independence of this country. We take the body to lie in state,” Ssekandi said.

Outrider motorbikes and Police patrol vehicles led the way for the Uganda Funeral Services hearse into the Parliament parking yard, with the family members following in three motor vehicles. The Police mounted a guard of honour before they played the national anthem.
Hundreds flocked to Parliament to view the body.
