ABOUT 80 supporters of Forum for democratic change (FDC) and relatives of Dr. Kizza Besigye on Saturday thronged his home in Rwakabengo and cleared the surrounding bushes and sealed the potholes on the 1.5km road from Rukungiri town.
Besigye returns tomorrow from South Africa, where he exiled himself after losing the 2001 presidential elections. He fled Uganda, citing harassment by security agents.
Roland Kaginda, an FDC coordinator, said Besigye would be accorded a special welcome.
“It will be the mother of all parties ever witnessed in Rukungiri,” he said.
“On Thursday, we shall pour water on the roads to reduce the dust. No dust will rise in Rukungiri town,” Kaginda said.
Besigye’s 100-year-old aunt, Justine Bainesente who stays at his home, looked on as over 80 people cleared the bushes.
A source said FDC had deployed about 10 men to guard the home.
Kaginda said Besigye would register as a voter at Rwakabengo and would contest for the presidency in 2006.
Besigye’s friends, supporters and well-wishers in South Africa hosted a farewell party for him in Pretoria on Saturday.
FDC’s external bureau in the UK on Saturday said it would publicise Besigye’s return.
With Besigye on the Kenya Airways plane will be international media agencies like the Voice of America, CNN and BBC.
