Work by the Sudanese national probe committee into John Garang’s plane crash has stalled, citing lack of cooperation by Uganda, the rapporteur, Siraj Eddin hamid, has said.
The Sudan Tribune, quoting Eddin, yesterday said the committee would return to Khartoum on October 30 after spending 27 days in Kampala without making any progress.
In a number of stinging allegations, Eddin said some important parts of the plane had disappeared from the site of the crash.
He said the Ugandan side was “seeking to complicate the probe team’s work for unknown reasons.” He said the participation of the Ugandan team was “weak and being carried out at a poor level.”
But information state minister Dr. James Nsaba Buturo yesterday dismissed the allegations as “absolutely nonsensical, unfounded, unrealistic and diversionary.”
He said the government was interested in the probe because, “We lost some of our nationals who were very skilled. we lost an aircraft, one of the best in the region, a dear friend (Garang) who had vision and ability of bringing peace to Southern Sudan.”
He said they were not taking the allegations seriously because “the Sudanese government doesn’t believe the person making them. We are cooperating and want the results to come out as soon as possible.”
