RESULTS of 25 Technical and Business Education candidates have been cancelled, following cases of malpractice during the June/July 2005 examinations.

Eight of the candidates were from the Buganda Royal, kichwamba, St. Benedict’s Kakindo, Kamengo and St. Maria Kyengera technical institutes. The other 17 were from Makerere business institute, UCC Tororo and St. Andrea Kahwa business education centres.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) executive secretary, Matthew Bukenya, yesterday said cases of malpractice had increased despite ‘intensified scouting’ while conducting national examinations.

“Many candidates smuggled unauthorised materials into examination rooms, while others were involved in acts of bribing UNEB examiners, collusion and external assistance,” he said.

Bukenya was presenting the 2005 Technical and Business Education examination results to education minister Namirembe Bitamazire at the ministry headquarters in Kampala.

Bitamazire warned against exam malpractice, saying UNEB would continue to cancel the results of the culprits.

Statistics on the general performance, however, showed that this year’s candidates scored better than those of 2004.

About 49.3% passed the examinations compared to the 46.2% who passed last year. At least 319 and 4,130 females and males respectively passed.

The performance for the business education examinations showed that 57.7% passed, compared to 56.6% last year.

Bitamazire said the policy of prioritising science and technical subjects was not misplaced.

“There have been many pessimistic reactions, but we still insist that this programme is not misplaced. Rather, it is developmental, with the increasing number of unemployment levels,” she said.
