SOPHIE Nantongo of Nnyongera Ekisanja fame has always hit the local entertainment scene with exciting, surprise musical releases.

The 23-year-old singer first established her a fan-base when she produced the album Naakulindanga (I shall always wait for you), while still with Eagles Production in 2002. Nantongo soon quit the group and many of her fans thought she had made an ‘emergency landing’. However, the flamboyant singer was operating undercover as a solo artiste, with financial assistance from her husband Kagoma Brand Tea’s Hajji Abdu Mubiru.

She broke the silence in 2004 when she released the album Liberty, which she dedicated to the Women’s Liberation Movement.

After a two-year solo project, she joined Kato Lubwama’s Diamonds Production. She has a new album Wansumulula (You set me free), which is not only wrapped with good beats but also has intriguing love, socio-economic and cultural messages. She uses figurative language to effectively convey sensitive messages.

In Wansumulula, the title track, Nantongo uses her experience to project the splendour of a love relationship.

In the song Kifaananyi (portrait) she hits hard at men who neglect their families or marital obligations. Such lazy men are no better than portraits, she sings. Abakazi is an ethical song that warns teenagers against wild love. Nantongo also shows her knowledge and appreciation of the Ganda culture through her song Ssenga (auntie), in which she teaches the public about cultural ceremonies like weddings and funerals. Other tracks on the CD are Gumira Ku Nze (be contented with me), Tobeeteekera (don’t trust them), Nantongo’s CD was recorded at Eddy Yawe’s Dream Studio in Kamwokya. It is being distributed by Lusyn Enterprises, Kampala’s Market Street.
