Huge crowds in Gulu municipality were on Sunday treated to a rare show when Democratic Party (DP) strongmen Norbert Mao, Nasser Sebaggala, Paul Semogerere, John Ssebaana Kizito and Prof. Richard Otto-Ebil addressed a joint rally.

The candidates had a chance to prove their ability to compete for the party presidential slot in the 2006 general elections. The rally was held at Kaunda Ground in the municipality.

The DP rally followed another big one at the same venue FDC presidential candidate Dr. Kiiza Besigye addressed on Saturday.
Mao said there would be chaos in DP if the imminent delegates’ conference elections are not democratic.

“We want and shall support clean elections on November 26 for the DP presidency but if not, there will be chaos in DP,” he said.

He said it was a natural challenge to the opposition FDC, when heavy rains that he called tears from the eyes of the Acholi disrupted their rally.

“I learnt that yesterday God saw the problems of the Acholi people and sent their tears to disrupt the FDC rally,” Mao said.

Semogerere promised to support any of the aspirants who shall be endorsed in the delegates’ conference. He trashed the view that DP was for Catholics and Baganda, saying it acco-mmodated all people.

He urged Ugandans to take DP as a party for all tribes, religious affliction and regions that love freedom.

“We want people to have freedom of speech, which is why the regional DP office we have just opened here is called the DP Freedom Office,” Semogerere said.

Sebaggala also pledged support for any candidate elected to stand for the DP presidency, if he is not the one.

Otoo said responsible leaders like Agago MP Prof. Morris Latigo, Aruu MP Odonga Otto and Terego MP Kasiano Wadri should be hooked back to their mother party, DP.
