STEPHEN Kawuma again lived to his name by leading ten players to the third phase of the chess Olympiad qualifiers on Sunday.

The former national champion won eight games, drew two and lost one to end the second phase at eight points at Lugogo club.

Kawuma won six straight games before his run was halted by the defeat to Harold Wanyama in round seven.

Kawuma’s slump continued with two successive draws against Isaac Munanira and Emmanuel Kabuye.

Kawuma, seeking a fourth appearance at the Olympiad, regained his touch when he beat Shadrack Kantinti for his 8th point.

But Kantinti, already with five wins and two draws had advanced in joint second position with nine others at 6 points.

Four players-Hassan Mulambe, Joachim Okoth, Bob Bibasa and Farouk Fauza were level at 5.5 and will go for a play-off this weekend.

The top two players will also qualify for the third phase action due in January.

The top six players will make the national team to the Olympiad.
