UGANDA telecom has released sh67m in scholarships for 26 needy students pursing undergraduate studies in five local universities for this academic year.

Felix Oketcho reports that Hansen Paulsen (above), the marketing manager, said at the awarding ceremony at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Monday that the scholarship package would cover tuition, accommodation, examination, administrative fees, pocket money and field allowances.

The programme is run under Uganda Telecom and Kulika Charitable Trust. It was established in 1981 with a vision of building Africa in which people acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes to fight poverty, ignorance and improve the quality of life. Paulsen said since its inception, the Trust had offered over 1,000 scholarships.

He said the Trust had enabled many Ugandans make positive contribution to the country. “Since December 2004, utl and Kulika have offered needy students an opportunity to study in engineering, agriculture, human medicine, psychology, education, veterinary medicine and architecture,” Paulsen said.

He asked on other firms to support the cause for a bright future generation.
