Standard Chartered Bank Group has raised $4m (about sh7.3b) from staff and fundraisings to be used in screening and eye surgeries for millions of blind people around the world.

In Uganda, about 150 blind people will undergo surgery to help regain their sight in a partnership between Standard Chartered Bank, Sight Savers International and Jinja Referral Hospital.

The programme, dubbed “Seeing is Believing,” is part of the bank’s relentless pursuit to restore eyesight to those suffering from avoidable blindness and raise awareness of the causes of blindness countrywide.

“Standard Chartered has pledged to raise $6m (sh11b) before the end of 2006 to achieve our aim of restoring sight to one million people,” Harriet Musoke, the head of corporate affairs at the bank, said.

Ben Male, Sight Savers’ country representative, said, “By restoring an individual’s sight, the person has capacity to make an economic contribution to the family and the community.”
