Kenyans win Kampala marathon

KENYAN athletes dominated the men’s MTN Kampala Marathon on Sunday as 2,271 runners from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and host Uganda took to the streets in yellow.

KENYAN athletes dominated the men’s MTN Kampala Marathon on Sunday as 2,271 runners from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and host Uganda took to the streets in yellow.

Laban Moiben, Isaac Kosgei and Dominic Lagat took the top three positions and shared out the sh9.4m top prize in the MTN- sponsored event.

The best Ugandan runner was Francis Yiga in fifth position.

Margaret Nakintu beat Jane Suuto to the women crown, while Ndejje University’s Wilson Busienei beat Moses Kipsiro in the men’s 10km open run.

The New Vision/Bukedde team of CEO William Pike, Stephen Candia, Robert Kiwendo, Sam Kyagulanyi and Bukedde editor Geoffrey Kulubya, finished fourth behind champions Photogenix, Roofings Ltd and Hima Multi Purpose, out of over 40 corporate teams that participated.

The event, facilitated by Red Cross, The New Vision, Capital FM, Uhuru restaurant, Coca Cola, Saracen, True African and DHL, raised sh25m for the Red Cross “Mama Bag project” to help expectant mothers in the internally displaced people’s camps in the war-ravaged northern Uganda.

minister of works John Nasasira thanked the sponsors and MTN for organising the event to alleviate the suffering of expectant mothers.

Uganda Athletic Federation president Dan Tamwesigire pledged to collaborate with the ministry of education and Sports to include the event on the international calendar.
