PM sex education
THE Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, also the Chancellor of Makerere University, had a well-spiced scholarly upbringing. During a reunion dinner for old Budonians at the Grand Imperial Hotel on Saturday, he recalled how in his school days the prestigious King’s College Budo gave boys lessons in courtship. He recounted the advice they got against risky sexual behaviour and wasting time. He said, “During our school days, we also learnt how to relate with girls since it was a mixed school. Those who managed got girlfriends, but they never played sex. I remember our headgirl once came to my room but I did not disturb her.”

Makerere scared
AFTER Makerere students went on strike and destroyed property recently, the University Council feared to hold meetings on the campus. Unlike previously, the emergency meeting that the Council called was shifted over two kilometres away to Mulago Medical School, probably for fear of another outbreak of the students’ violent strike. “Do not ask us why we are sitting here today. We have so many boardrooms and this is one of them. We have chosen to have our meeting from here,” the University Council chairman, Gabriel Opio, told journalists.

Police perplexed
KAMPALA’s big hotels are in a scare of the increasing rate of workshop and seminar thieves. The latest case was at the Ramsar International Conference on Environment at Munyonyo last week, where two goons disguised as participants were nabbed stealing a laptop. The Police are scratching their heads pondering how the conmen can operate under their noses and embarrass organisers and international guests. The Regional Police Commander, Gabriel Tibayungwa, said the thieves easily outwit their victims by being smartly dressed. “They dress smartly and you can never suspect them,” he said.

Movement test
While others were wondering about last week’s riots after the arrest of FDC president Col. Kizza Besigye, Kabula County MP James Kakooza was happy that the Movement Government had finally got an opportunity to test its ability to contain the chaos that might come during the 2006 elections. “This is a time to test whether the government has the capacity to handle any situation. It is a good time to test the security of the nation,” he said at Parliament.
