THE recently-concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Conference elections were transparent, the party’s new secretary general announced yesterday.

At a maiden news conference at the NRM’s 10 Kyaddondo Road headquarters, Amama Mbabazi said, “The elections were smooth and no one is disgruntled. Our democracy has matured. Our electoral commission testifies to this.”

“Those of us who were vying for the different positions are tested cadres. I can say with certainty that we competed in good faith,” he said. The NRM deputy treasurer, Singh Katongole and party spokesperson Ofwono Opondo attended.

Mbabazi said the party would soon name a task force to solicit for votes in the 2006 March elections and launch its manifesto.

“We have set the motion to sweep all the votes in the coming elections. I have absolutely no doubt that the NRM will sweep the votes because people have confidence in us due to our unrivalled track record,” he said.

On November 18, the NRM delegates elected President Yoweri Museveni as the NRM chairperson/presidential candidate, Moses Kigongo and Rebecca Kadaga as vice-chairpersons, Mbabazi as secretary general, Dorothy Hyuha as the deputy secretary general, Gilbert Bukenya as vice-chairperson (Central), Mike Mukula (eastern), Matayo Kyaligonza (western) and Moses Ali (northern).

Mbabazi said the NRM was to hold primaries for parliament and district councils on December 7.
