UGANDA, led by captain Deo Akope, will be riding on a current rich vein of form to try and wrestle the East Africa Challenge golf title from Kenya.

The three-day competition featuring Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi tees off this morning in Kigali.

The match-play tournament, that has for the first time ever attracted five nations, starts with the singles match-play at the refurbished par-72 course.

“The course is fantastic. The boys are practicing well and morale is high up. Kenya and Tanzania are the teams to beat but Rwanda have also improved a lot so we won’t take them for granted,” Uganda Golf Union (UGU) president Sam Zaramba said.

Team manager Charles Kareba will mainly rely on Uganda Open champion Charles Yokwe, and Akope coming off victory in the Tanzania Open and Stephen Kasaija who leads the UGU championship.

Kareba has an array of stars in Birungi, Amos Kamya, Denis Anguyo, Godfrey Mande, George Olayo, John Basabose and Gerald Ayella to pick from to make a team of eight.
