By Douglas Mazune UGANDAN captain Deo Akope has recovered from a bout of malaria and will defend his title in the Rwanda Golf Open that tees off in Kigali today.

“Akope is on the course practicing right now. It’s good that he is going to defend his title,” team manager Charles Kareba said.

Akope fell sick last Sunday, missing out on the East Africa Golf Challenge in which Uganda finished third.

Kareba believes Ugandans Charles Yokwe, Stephen Birungi, Stephen Kasaija, Godfrey Mande, Dennis Anguyo, George Olayo, Amos Kamya and John Basabose also have a good chance of winning the 54-hole stroke-play tournament.

“All the boys are confident and morale is high. They have put the East African Challenge poor show behind them and are now focused on the Rwanda Open. We want to bring back the trophy to Uganda,” Kareba said.

Kenya’s David Odhiambo, Stanley Sanga from Kenya and Rwandans Emmanuel Ruterana, Stephen Katwiremu and Davis Kashaka are all set for the challenge.
