UGANDA will launch its quest for regional honours when the East, Central and Southern Africa Senior basketball Challenge Cup starts today at the Lugogo Indoor stadium.

Uganda’s male and female national teams will face eleven other national teams from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles and Zambia.

Uganda last took part in the Zone Five event hosted by Ethiopia in 1989 where Sudan emerged champions and Uganda finished in fifth place.

“Ethiopia was the last country to host the event before the annual championship died out which is why we have decided to revive the Zone Five tournament,” tournament organiser, Cassius Ochokombege said.

Sam Obol will captain the 12-man national team with Robert Ndamagye and Jason Mehl as coaches. Uganda take on Tanzania in the opening game of the week-long tournament.

Under coach Nimrod Kaboha, captain Miriam Hamala will lead the women’s team as they make a debut in the event.

National Council of Sports (NCS), Rwenzori Mineral Water, Century Bottling Company, WBS Television, CBS Radio, Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) have boosted the tournament.

Norman Katende adds that Norman Blick beat his brother Donald Blick and Sadolin Power leading scorer Ken Balyejusa to the season’s MTN Basketball Most valuable Player award on Friday.

Blick was crowned by federation president John Ssimbwa at the ceremony that took place at Lugogo Indoor stadium.

A-1 Challenge’s point guard Gloria Kyomugisha took the women MVP accolade, beating team mate Betty Namukasa to the award, which saw all the top performers crowned.

MTN’s Rita Okuthe also crowned men’s league champions Nkumba-Marines and women winners A-1 Challenge.
