THERE was drama in Kigali yesterday when officials of disqualified Harambee Stars arrived and insisted they were ready to play.

Kenya Football Federation (KFF) secretary Dan Omino said he had secured 25 airtickets for the reconstituted team to fly to Kigali at noon yesterday but a dispatch from CECAFA secretary Nicholas Musonye warned them not to waste time.

Harambee Stars were disqualified from the competition after refusing to travel last week due to a players’ bonus dispute with KFF.

r CRANES head coach Mohammad Abbas did not know how good Tom Ssemwogerere was when he invited him as a provisional player to the national side in October. He does now.

The 21-year-old defender took just 90 minutes against Ethiopia to convince the Egyptian that with or without traditional starters in defence—Ibrahim Sekagya, Timothy Batabaire and Shaka Okello —life will be the same.“I did not expect such a performance from him especially with the pace at which the game was played. He looked so comfortable on the ball, showed great vision and game reading,” said Abbas.

Ssemwogerere only managed a first team place after Shaka Okello, was ruled out after damaging thigh muscles. He will now be the first on Abbas’ team sheet to take on Djibout tonight.

Abbas originally felt Ssemogerere lacked the physique and experience to make the cut in international football.

Following the distressing 0-0 draw with Ethiopia the previous night, the coach also quietly reminded his players that it was never in their nature to surrender. “They know that a draw against the defending champions was not bad but can still do better ,” said Abbas.
