EXPRESS FC will get a new chairman after the incumbent Godfrey Kirumira decided not to stand in Sunday’s elections.

Elections are the top item at the soccer club’s first general assembly since Kirumira took over in 1998. The assembly is due at Mutesa 11 Stadium, Wankulukuku.

Kirumira, who led the club to two Kakungulu Cup wins, said yesterday he had served long enough.

“I will not stand, I have been chairman for a long time and I wish the next leader success,” Kirumira said.

“What I am doing right now is to organise the general assembly because the club has to move on.”
A life member Sam Kiwanuka at the weekend declared his candidature for the hot seat.

Kiwanuka, served briefly as vice chairman in the early period of Kirumira’s reign.

Kampala accountant Kiwanuka had previously worked as secretary of the mass following club.

Last month, a leadership crisis threatened the club’s survival after Kirumira reportedly resigned.

The Kampala business tycoon quit following accusations by fans of non-performance. The fans also blamed Kirumira for failure to call a general assembly during his era.

Kirumira’s move sparked off a leadership crisis, which was later put to rest after separate meetings of the club trustees and fans early this month.

Kirumira bounced back and was charged with the task of organising the meeting.
