THE Democratic Party (DP) was yesterday furious after former Kampala mayor Alhaj Nassar Ntege Sebaggala failed to meet a pledge of sh30m he made at the just-ended national delegates’ conference.

Sebaggala (right), while campaigning to be party president general on Sunday evening, pulled out of his bag six bundles of sh50,000 notes and waved them at the DP delegates. This was at Mandela Sports Hotel, Namboole in Kampala.

The party had not fed the delegates and the meal available in the hotel of chips and fish, was going for sh8,000. The smell of the food was wafting through the air.

Sebaggala excited delegates with a promise to refund their transport costs. He, however, sneaked out of the hotel with his money as soon as he saw he was trailing Kampala mayor Ssebaana Kizito in the polls.

Outgoing organising secretary Damiano Lubega said, “Sebaggala did not pay up. He excited our members and they are expecting us to pass on the money to them.

But he hasn’t given us anything.”
Ssebaana, the new party president, was yesterday reported to be raising funds from private savings in order to pay the costs.
“We would like every delegate to be transported back home. The mayor is still raising the money.

Ring me at 2:00pm and I will tell you exactly how much we have raised and who we have paid,” Matia Nsubuga, Ssebaana’s personal assistant, said yesterday morning.

He accused Sebaggala of causing confusion in the party. He said Santos Alima, the organising committee treasurer, was responsible for collecting all pledges and the problem would be solved.

But Sebaggala said, “Pay them for what? They vote (sic) wrongly. When a malaya (prostitute) contracts to do certain work and she does not do it, does she still ask for pay?”

He said he knew those who voted for him and had already paid them, adding that those complaining did not vote for him.
